Why Do I Have Low Water Pressure? 6 Common Reasons

localsearch • May 15, 2023

If your bathtub is filling super slowly or you’re having trouble rinsing that last bit of shampoo from your hair, it’s probably low water pressure. While dealing with low water pressure can be frustrating, the good news is it doesn’t always spell big plumbing problems. In this article, we explore six common reasons for low water pressure and how a plumber can help.

Your Main Shutoff Valve Is in the Wrong Position

The main shutoff valve controls the water supply to your entire home. If it’s not fully open, it will limit the amount of water coming through and cause low water pressure. If you want to check the valve, you can usually find it near your water meter on the side facing the street. If you’re in an apartment it may be in the basement or on the outside wall of a utility area.

Once you’ve found your main shutoff valve, ensure it’s turned counter-clockwise as far as possible using the wheel-like handle. If it’s a lever handle, make sure the pipe direction and the handle are parallel. If this doesn’t fix your pressure problems, it’s time to call a plumber!

Your Water Meter Valve Is Not Fully Open

Similar to the main shutoff valve, the water meter valve regulates water flow into your home. It’s typically located near the main shutoff valve and should be fully open to ensure optimal water pressure. However, unlike the main shutoff valve, the water meter valve is council property, so it’s best not to touch it unless it’s an emergency. If you suspect an issue with your water meter valve, call a plumber.

You Have Issues with Your Hot Water Heater

Did you know that your hot water heater can cause can not only cause low pressure in your hot water, but your cold water too? This is generally due to two reasons:

HARD WATER BUILD UP: Minerals and other deposits build up within the water heater tank and connected pipes. As these deposits increase, the available space for water flow decreases and compromises the water flowing in or out.

WATER HEATER SHUTOFF VALVE: Every water heater features a shut-off valve. If this valve is closed or not fully open, your home may experience reduced water pressure. By ensuring the water heater valve is in the ‘open’ position, you can restore the water pressure to its normal level.

Please note that hot water systems are dangerous and generate a lot of pressure, so it’s always best to call a plumber when dealing with these.

Your Aerator Screen Is Clogged

Aerator screens are found on taps and showerheads. Their primary function is to regulate water flow via tiny mesh holes and reduce splashing. Over time, these screens can become clogged with debris and sediment, resulting in low water pressure. To fix this, remove the aerator, clean the screen and reassemble the fixture.

Your Water Pipes Are Clogged or Corroded

Clogged or corroded pipes can severely impact water pressure. Mineral deposits, rust and other debris can accumulate in pipes, restricting water flow. Corroded water pipes are more common in older homes and are often accompanied by water discoloration. In these cases, it’s essential to enlist the help of a skilled plumber who can recommend appropriate solutions.

You Have Issues with Your Water Pressure Regulator

A water pressure regulator is a device that maintains consistent water pressure in your home. If it’s malfunctioning or not set correctly, it can lead to a sudden drop (or spike) in water pressure. If this sounds like your problem, contact a plumber so they can examine and adjust your regulator, or replace it if necessary.
